Mapping Competition

The last (August) Mapping competition turned out to be a bust, and I'll admit this is partly my fault for screwing up the last one so badly, but also due to the fact that it is so difficult to follow and enter.

Due to the poor turnout, only one map was officially submitted in time, which wins by default. I will be endeavouring to automating the competition process somewhat during a redesign of some of the systems here on Quadropolis (you may have already noticed some of these improvements), utilising the rating system. Suggestions and comments on this are more than welcome.

I'd let a little time go by between competitions, rather than just having them one after another.
(And, as I said on the August competition node, shadow wanted Monastery entered as well.)

Perhaps you should also announce them a while in advance, so that any maps in progress can be made competition maps?
(And an afterthought: The themed competition in July was a good idea. Perhaps another?)

Yeah, I know shadow wanted the map entered, and there were other maps that "should have" entered, and then some others that wanted entry after the deadline. When it came down to it, nobody but DrMiracles followed the rules by posting the entry to the competition node, and I have to be fair by expecting the same from everyone else (yes I know, I want to simplify too, but it needs to be unilateral and "together").

About announcing in advance, a month isn't enough? Part of the "testing" quality of the competition is the time limit, isn't it?

Eventually, when I get some other things done to the site, I'll make a competition module which will handle this kind of stuff (as well as displaying them in a publicly visible place for voting), so entering would be as simple as ticking a box on your node when you create/edit it.

Help is always welcome, I have alot on my plate around the whole Sauer community :)

Themed competition would be nice, but without those irritating rules like: "there must be one base under water and map cant be symmetrical in any way". Making a really good map is hard allready and too much restrictions make it thrustrating IMO. What I´m suggesting is to have a certain theme(architechtural or textures) and maybe a certain gamemode and size.

Just my two ogrish dinars.

I personally liked the "one base under water" rule. It made it much more interesting.
I don't like restrictions on symmetry, though. I have a tendency to make maps symmetrical, though it may be bilateral or radial. Some people make maps with no symmetry at all.

how about a contest every other month?
and let the winner decide the theme for the next contest.
I think mapsize should vary on occasion.
That new mapmodels can be used if made by mapper ( extra points?) and given to community

having said my opinion, I probably won't enter anything...I'm still working on a giant rpg map
maybe sections of it?

How about this..

Have themed competitions, once every quarter (or three months). Rate maps constantly with every vote made (I want to tweak the rating stuff too to factor in total votes) and display them (or the top N of them) in a block on the front page with screenshots and blurbs.

Maps enter the competition by ticking the "Enter current quarterly competition" box on their map node when submitting/editing. Nodes would only be able to enter a competition once.

That would make the next competition "Q4 2007" (October - November - December), which should (hopefully) be time to get the ideas ironed out and write up a module.
